Therapy for Hip Pain Relief

Hip pain makes basic everyday life more difficult as well as painful. Simple movements like walking, going up or down stairs, bending, lifting, and even getting in and out of a car cause pain in the thigh, groin, and inside and outside of the hip joint. Hip pain literally creates a pain in the butt and degrades quality of life. Left unchecked, hip pain can lead to depression and anxiety due to the inability to participate in normal, daily activities. Treatments may include stretching exercises, physical therapy, arthroscopy, or arthroplasty.

Common Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain arises for many different reasons:

·       Osteoarthritis causes hip pain for many senior citizens. Normal wear and tear on the joint causes pain and even limits mobility.

·       Bursitis from repetitive activities causes temporary pain.

·       Muscle strain, especially at the hip flexor, results from overuse or sports injury. Muscle tears and tendonitis cause hip pain, especially in athletes.

·       Some mothers-to-be experience hip pain during pregnancy as hormones relax hip ligaments in advance of birth.

Some hip pain resolves with rest, compression, ice, and elevation. Other hip pain requires medical intervention. This may consist of a regimen of stretching, physical therapy, or surgery. Post-injury or post-surgery recovery often includes physical therapy and at-home exercises.

At-Home Therapy for Hip Pain

The first at-home treatment people turn to is the old-standby RICE treatment. This includes:

·       Rest

·       Ice

·       Compression

·       Elevation

RICE may work for a minor injury from overuse, but more often additional intervention is required. Your medical care provider may suggest reducing pain and improving flexibility through simple stretching exercises.

Knee lifts, hip rotations, and stretching the hip and back stretch the muscles around the hip. Other exercises such as hip flexions, extensions, abductions, and mini squats strengthen hip muscles to improve mobility and reduce pain.

 Physical Therapy for Hip Pain

Physical therapists assess the causes of the hip pain, as well as evaluating the pelvis and back. They create a personalized therapy plan to bring relief to your pain, improve mobility, and get you back to living your best life.  Physical therapy for hip pain relief includes one or more modalities such as:

·       Myofascial (muscle fascia) release therapy

·       Manipulations and maneuvers that ease stiff muscles and increase range of motion in joints

·       Specialized exercises that strengthen weak muscles and improve stability

·       Functional movement training to strengthen the entire hip muscle group to optimize function

·       Counseling and education on posture, body mechanics, and self-care.

Physical therapists often augment in-office therapy with at-home movements and exercises to supplement and reinforce therapy in-between sessions.
